More specifically, our forum will address three questions. At the same time, our forum intends to move forward beyond the current framing paradigm, by outlining new ideas about framing research and by exploring a new paradigm(s) for media effects research. The purpose of our forum is to continue this discussion by inviting senior scholars and asking them to reflect on framing research. In response, efforts have been made recently to take stock of current framing research, sort out conceptual and operational inconsistencies, and discuss new directions for future research (e.g., Cacciatore, Scheufele, & Iyengar, 2016 Krippendorff, 2017). Framing may have been overused and sometimes misused in communication research to the point where it has become unclear what is framing and what is not, creating a blurred line between framing and other media effects models. There are so many framing papers out there, many of which should not be even considered framing research." This sentiment, though somewhat impulsive, seems to be echoed by other researchers. At a research session at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) conference in 2011, someone in the audience stood up and surprised others by arguing that "we need to declare a moratorium on framing research.
